24 Apr 2025, 5pm. Overall: 2 stars.
Buns: 3 stars.
Cakes: 2 stars.
Swee Heng used to provide tasty, good-quality baked goods at very reasonable prices. They were famed for their pandan chiffon cakes in their early years. The quality has dropped drastically over the years, especially since their rapid expansion, and I'm presuming their items are now made in a central kitchen.
The products are edible, but the taste and texture need improvement, especially for their cakes. The buns are still okay.
There was a long queue at this outlet, and the cashier doesn't work efficiently.
I bought their Japanese High Calcium Cheese Cake ($6) today and was disappointed. The taste and texture were both not good. Some mouthfuls were quite salty, which shows that the mixture wasn't mixed well or evenly prior to baking. It was also too crumbly when I poked it with a fork; it didn't hold together well and crumbled everywhere. It also had a short expiry date of only 3 days, even in the refrigerator.
I previously tried their carrot cake, which came with rancid walnuts, and it completely ruined my day because I had a craving.
I hope Swee Heng concentrates more on providing quality products and not just expanding and making money, because without good products, customers won't be coming back.
Update: Their newest taro salted egg bun is quite heavy on the palate. I expected a runny filling, but it’s more of a taro and salted egg paste instead, which gets a little *jialat* after a while. The mochi red bean polo bun was a little dry and didn’t contain much filling.
As always, this is one of the best neighborhood bakeries with a wide variety of affordable bread.
Some must-try items include their hand-tear bun, walnut cheese bread, chicken floss bun, cherry custard danish, blueberry muffin cake, and brown sugar twist. Honestly, I don’t think there’s any bread there that I hate.
On June 3rd, 2024, at noon, I purchased a cake at the Swee Heng 1989 Classic branch in the Tampines Mall Basement. The female staff member did not honor the Passion Card discount, even after I showed her my Passion Card along with my payment. She even commented that the discount was only minimal, then proceeded to ignore me and serve the next customer instead of rectifying the issue. The staff member was not even apologetic – a very negative experience. There are other bakeries where I can get a better experience.
"Don't patronize this shop. Their swiss roll is a scam. They intentionally position the swiss roll so that the half with cream is facing you. When you get back, you'll find out the other half has no cream."
"The only Chinese auntie working there has lousy customer service. So irritating. She said it would be a 5-minute wait, but it became 15 minutes. Then she served us with a smug face. PH, please send her for training. We would rather be served by a younger but dedicated staff member than an experienced but grumpy and arrogant one. Terrible!"
"Worst pizza I've ever had at Pizza Hut. It tasted stale and was cold. We also didn't get a good response from the counter lady when we ordered. I'm never going there again."
"Kudos to the male staff. Very good service and they were polite. I asked for ketchup, but they didn't have any. He went outside and borrowed a sachet of ketchup from their neighbor just to give it to us. What an extra mile of service! Good job! 👍👍👍👍"
"STAFF DEMONSTRATED POOR SERVICE AND A BAD ATTITUDE
Visited this outlet on June 26, 2022, around 7 PM. I ordered 6 slices of pizza and informed the staff that I would like to pack 5 slices for takeout, while eating 1 slice there.
The staff refused to provide a plate, box, or any holder for the slice I was eating on-site, arguing that it was wasteful. They kept arguing.
Does Pizza Hut expect customers to eat with their bare hands?
Very bad attitude and very poor service, as demonstrated by the staff."
STAY AWAY from Pizza Hut @ Tampines Hub.
I had a very bad experience at this branch this evening. I went to Tampines Hub with my family just to spend time, felt hungry, and thought of having a meal at Pizza Hut. The queue wasn't really long, just 5-6 people. I noticed a few people leaving the queue, murmuring something. Then it was the turn of the person before me. We thought we were about to order after waiting for about 20 minutes, but a staff member told us we needed to wait longer (at least 15 minutes) because they were busy with outdoor orders. I learned that the person before me had been waiting for almost 45 minutes. I was totally annoyed, and the staff was saying they need to take care of outdoor orders first. She was adamant that we had to wait. I asked her to call her manager, who just gave some lame reasons. After some convincing, they agreed to take our order. The story doesn't end there. In my plate, I found a piece of coal. I seriously doubt their hygiene. When I pointed this out to the staff, they were apologetic, but not at all responsible. The worst thing was seeing a Muslim family waiting there for food (I assume they were there to end their fasting – this happened around 7 PM).
Points:
1. This outlet seems to prioritize outdoor delivery – if this is true, shut the doors except for outdoor delivery.
2. Don't just open the doors and make customers leave after waiting for close to an hour.
3. Have at least one senior staff member on duty. I saw 2 staff, both of whom looked like college students, and the manager was trying to blame the mistakes on one of the staff, saying he was new. Goddamn - if they are new, why are you making them handle the entire shop without any guidance from a senior staff member?
4. The lady (or girl?) staff member at the shop was really rude. When I wanted a written note acknowledging that I found a piece of coal in my plate, they didn't even respond (I have photo and video proof of this).
I expect a proper response from Singapore Pizza Hut management. If I don't get one, I will need to consider my next steps.
