24 Apr 2025, 5pm. Overall: 2 stars. Buns: 3 stars. Cakes: 2 stars. Swee Heng used to provide tasty, good-quality baked goods at very reasonable prices. They were famed for their pandan chiffon cakes in their early years. The quality has dropped drastically over the years, especially since their rapid expansion, and I'm presuming their items are now made in a central kitchen. The products are edible, but the taste and texture need improvement, especially for their cakes. The buns are still okay. There was a long queue at this outlet, and the cashier doesn't work efficiently. I bought their Japanese High Calcium Cheese Cake ($6) today and was disappointed. The taste and texture were both not good. Some mouthfuls were quite salty, which shows that the mixture wasn't mixed well or evenly prior to baking. It was also too crumbly when I poked it with a fork; it didn't hold together well and crumbled everywhere. It also had a short expiry date of only 3 days, even in the refrigerator. I previously tried their carrot cake, which came with rancid walnuts, and it completely ruined my day because I had a craving. I hope Swee Heng concentrates more on providing quality products and not just expanding and making money, because without good products, customers won't be coming back.

Update: Their newest taro salted egg bun is quite heavy on the palate. I expected a runny filling, but it’s more of a taro and salted egg paste instead, which gets a little *jialat* after a while. The mochi red bean polo bun was a little dry and didn’t contain much filling. As always, this is one of the best neighborhood bakeries with a wide variety of affordable bread. Some must-try items include their hand-tear bun, walnut cheese bread, chicken floss bun, cherry custard danish, blueberry muffin cake, and brown sugar twist. Honestly, I don’t think there’s any bread there that I hate.

Delicious Otah and Crabmeat buns! Both were perfectly baked and very flavorful. The otah had a nice spicy kick, and the crabmeat was sweet and savory. I highly recommend them!

"I love Swee Heng's bread. I miss the cranberry walnut bun and the Hokkaido cranberry bun. They seem to have stopped making them this year. I would love for them to bring them back if possible! 😍"

"I tried their walnut cranberry cream cheese bread once and can’t help but come back for more! It's a very soft and moist bread with an adequate amount of cream cheese. The cranberries and walnuts definitely add an extra layer of texture and aroma to the pastry. They have mini versions selling at $2.50 for a box of three (the regular size is $1.50). I used to buy the mini ones as it felt like a better deal, but I ended up going back to the regular one because it has more cheese, and the mini ones don’t have the walnuts and cranberries for that extra crunchiness and flavor. I've found that they tend to sell out later in the day, so please come early if you want to try it."

On June 3rd, 2024, at noon, I purchased a cake at the Swee Heng 1989 Classic branch in the Tampines Mall Basement. The female staff member did not honor the Passion Card discount, even after I showed her my Passion Card along with my payment. She even commented that the discount was only minimal, then proceeded to ignore me and serve the next customer instead of rectifying the issue. The staff member was not even apologetic – a very negative experience. There are other bakeries where I can get a better experience.

"Don't patronize this shop. Their swiss roll is a scam. They intentionally position the swiss roll so that the half with cream is facing you. When you get back, you'll find out the other half has no cream."

"The cashier had a very cold attitude, which was a real turn-off."

I bought two buns for S$4.20. I prepared a $2 note, two $1 coins, and a twenty-cent coin. After I handed the exact amount to the cashier, she turned back and showed me only $3.20 in her hand (one dollar coin was missing). I told her there were two $1 coins and that she might have dropped one. But she just refused to check and insisted I had only given her $3.20. I was totally disappointed and had to dig through all my coins to make another $1. This time, she couldn't even figure out how to tally the amount! My goodness, I could have given her $5.20 if she had asked, but please don't accuse me of shortchanging. I'm totally disappointed by the whole incident and will consider going to Swee Heng at OTH if I see that cashier again.

Review for Swee Heng @ Tampines Hub I bought 3 breads amounting to $5.50 and gave the cashier $7. She took out a calculator to calculate my change. I took my change, turned, and had only taken one small step away from the cashier when I opened my hand to see the coins. I realized I received $1.40 instead of $1.50. Immediately, I told the cashier the change was short 10 cents. She went "huh" and started searching (for who knows what) in a small black pouch on top of the cash register. I'm not sure if she was digging for a 10-cent coin or the receipt, so I repeated that my purchases were $5.50 and I gave her $7, so the change should be $1.50 instead of $1.40. I said it's ok if you don't have 10 cents, I'm just highlighting it. Then the cashier replied, "I think your purchases were $5.60, right?" I told her no, it was $5.50, and she argued back, saying no, it was $5.60. I didn't want to argue over 10 cents, so I just said it's ok and walked off. When I walked past the bread shelves, I looked at the prices, and indeed, my items added up to $5.50. Just wanted to share with everyone: please check the change you get back before walking away from the cashier (even if it is just one tiny step), otherwise the cashier will say it's your fault or tell you your items totaled a different amount. 😑 I should have known something wasn't right when she took out a calculator to calculate the change she needed to return. 🤦🏻‍♀️
