Nya, Jangan Marah: A Peranakan Journey of Tradition and Transformation

"Nya, Jangan Marah" (meaning "Nya, Don't Be Angry") invites audiences to a captivating evening that masterfully weaves together four distinct stories. This insightful showcase delves into the dynamic tension between cherished tradition and inevitable transformation within Singapore's vibrant Peranakan community. Set against the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary Singapore, these narratives peel back the intricate layers of heritage, memory, and identity, exploring how cultural roots endure amidst change.
Exploring the Peranakan Tapestry
From the playful chaos of a "catfight" over a traditional kueh to a dedicated docent's earnest struggle to impart genuine cultural knowledge beyond superficial media portrayals, each story offers a unique lens. We witness a daughter's innovative reimagining of the classic kebaya, blending modernity with timeless elegance, and observe a matriarch's poignant battle to maintain her grip on a fading legacy. Through these diverse perspectives, "Nya, Jangan Marah" encourages audiences to laugh, reflect, and thoughtfully engage with the ongoing challenge of honoring our past while bravely navigating the future.
Bridging Past and Future
At its heart, the production poses a profound question, resonating deeply with the true Singaporean spirit: How do we preserve our unique cultural flavours, ensuring they remain vibrant and relevant without becoming stagnant? And, crucially, how do we embrace evolution and progress without sacrificing the very soul of who we are as a community?
